AI Watermarks: Why Being Authentic is More Important Than Ever

Did you know that AI-generated content is now traceable? Thanks to new technologies built into major Large Language Models (LLMs) like Claude and ChatGPT, AI watermarks will soon be added to content. So, why is this important? With more people becoming wary and mistrustful of content generated by AI, we’re seeing a backlash. The only way to stand out from all the noise and build effective trust signals online is to create authentic content. Let’s look at what you need to know…

What are AI watermarks?

The new AI watermarking only changes what’s detectable. In plain-English, it’s a hidden signal embedded in AI-generated text which shows if content was produced or partly produced by an LLM. This has all come about due to the EU AI Act’s Code of Practice on Transparency of AI-Generated Content. Throughout 2026, major providers across Europe have been rolling out changes.

Here are two of the rules:

Providers of chatbots, virtual assistants and other systems intended to interact with people must design them so that users are informed they are interacting with AI.

Providers of generative AI systems — producing text, images, audio, video — must mark outputs in a machine-readable format and ensure they are detectable as artificially generated or manipulated. A standardised EU label is being developed.

You’re probably thinking at this point, “But we’re not in the EU anymore?” Yes, that’s right, but if you trade with the EU or have EU customers, then you’ll need to comply.

It’s worth noting that watermark detection isn’t foolproof and doesn’t guarantee it’s been written by a human. In fact, heavily edited AI content might not register at all. However, this new technology doesn’t change what makes content genuinely useful or trustworthy.

Create content worth reading

Instead of worrying about detection, your aim should be to create content that’s actually worth reading. Think about what you can say in your marketing that shows you are providing authentic business content.

Here are a few content tips for you to consider:

  • Replace general views with your own thoughts, opinions or perspectives.
  • Provide original insights and not summarised research produced by others.
  • Give your readers a clear point of view, rather than simply sharing generic advice.
  • Maintain a consistent tone of voice that matches how you communicate as a business.
  • Use real examples of how you’ve helped a customer with real stats or case studies.

Why authentic content is good for SEO and GEO

Search engines have been prioritising helpful, original content over volume for some time now when it comes to SEO (search engine optimisation). The intent and sentiment of how and why someone searches for something online is more important than numbers. And when it comes to your business being recommended on AI chatbots, GEO (generative engine optimisation), it’s all about trust signals.

AI bots aren’t looking for AI-generated content. If you’ve used AI to create your website content, it could be very similar to someone else’s website. So, why should they rank or recommend your business higher than someone who’s made the effort to create authentic content? AI bots are hungry for useful information written by people with real experience, expertise and authority they can trust (the EEAT framework).

Readers respond to content that feels like it’s been genuinely written for them. Authenticity is directly linked to trust and makes you more credible with your audiences and algorithms.

How to use AI for content creation

Here’s a simple checklist:

  1. Use AI for structuring, researching or drafting your ideas, but make edits in your own voice.
  2. Explore different audience listening systems online to get a better understanding of what interests your customers.
  3. Make sure you include specific information or details only you would know, such as real-life client stories, your opinions or factual numbers.
  4. Read your copy aloud to check it sounds like your business has written it.
  5. Be transparent with your audience about how your content is produced, if you’re asked.

Conclusion

AI watermarks are a technical development, but this isn’t a shortcut to creating trustworthy content. As more businesses embrace AI tools, those who stand out online will be the ones whose content features their brand voice and reflects genuine expertise. Don’t become part of the ever-growing AI echo chamber. Create valuable, authentic content that drives meaningful connections with your audiences and ultimately your customers.
